B i o g r a p h y

               Tina Tsai is a musician born with microtia, an underdeveloped external ear. She started her musical training at the age of 5, emphasizing on ear training and composition with piano studies, and began her clarinet studies at the age of 13. With multiple distinguished scholarships, she graduated with her Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from the University of California, Irvine. Miss Tsai received her Master of Music degree from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University at the age of 23. 

         As a musician suffering from hearing loss, Miss Tsai hopes to be an inspiration to those with hearing disabilities to not be discouraged and to pursue a life enriched with music. She recently organized a charity concert in Cupertino, California, to help raise funds for the UCSF hearing Research Foundation, which focuses on the causes and cures for hearing loss.

                Miss Tsai has been invited to perform at numerous concerts such as the Thursday Noon Concert Series at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, Tong Yeong International Music Festival in South Korea, Skyline Church in Oakland, and most recently the opening concert with Winchester Orchestra of Saratoga as the soloist. Her upcoming projects include a collaborative chamber concert and a performance as a featured soloist in the Bruch Double Concerto for Viola and Clarinet, with the Mission College Symphony.

                Besides her performing career, Miss Tsai loves teaching students of all ages and has years of teaching experience. She has worked as the woodwind sectional coach with the California Youth Symphony as well as the Bay Area Youth Music Society. Her proudest achievement is seeing her students perform at Carnegie Hall in New York as winners of the American Protege Competition. Miss Tsai currently maintains a private clarinet studio in the Sunnyvale/Bay Area.

               Apart from the music career, Miss Tsai has a passion for learning different cultures and languages. She is fluent in English, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and basic Korean. She recently received a certification for the Korean Proficiency Exam from the National Institute of the International Education Department, and strives to further her language studies during her spare time.

               Miss Tsai has had the honor to work with some of the prominent musicians such as Robert Spring, Eddy Vanoosthuyse, Steve Barta, Jerry Chae, Maria Lambros, Nina Scolnik, and Johannes Peitz. Her principal teachers are Joanne Tsai, Charlotte McManus, Amanda Walker, and Edward Palanker.
